Wagentristl Estate

Wines with Character from the Slopes of the Leitha Mountains

Founded in 1888 in Großhöflein, Wagentristl is a family-run estate now in its fifth generation. What began as a traditional mixed farm known as “Hof Nr. 135” has, over time, evolved into a modern winery dedicated entirely to viticulture. Under the guidance of Rudi Wagentristl, the estate produces wines with structure, depth, and finesse — a blend of heritage and personal vision..

A Singular Terroir

The winery’s vineyards are located on the gentle slopes of the Leithagebirge and its foothills — a region with a distinctive microclimate and rare soil composition that provide an ideal foundation for wines of great clarity and character. Each vineyard is treated as a world of its own, with careful cultivation to preserve its individual identity.

“I want to make others happy with these wines, but also myself!”

THe Vineyards

The Föllikberg is an alluvial cone of the Leitha
Mountains located south of Großhölein. It was
created 16 million years ago when rivers transported gravel and sand from the Leitha Mountains into the ancient Tethys Sea. The site’s heavy, calcareous and particularly fertile sediment soils offer the best preconditions for our Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt, Cabernet Sauvignon, Welschriesling, Gelber
Muskateller, and Muskat Ottonel vines.

For over one hundred years, the southwest slopes of the Leitha Mountains near Müllendorf have served as a quarry for limestone in its purest form: chalk.
The stark white cliffs of the quarry can be
seen from a distance and are always fascinating to behold. Our Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc vineyards have their home on this unique soil..

The Reisbühel vineyard is one of the very best vineyards of the Leitha Mountains. Outstanding grapes for our most powerful Blaufränkisch ripen in this particularly warm, southeast-facing site that is well protected from the wind

“I am a friend of clear lines and that is the course I take in the vinification of my wines. The result is wines with inimitable character. Not wines that fit a template, but wines with corners and edges, and for exactly this reason, they excel. Wines that sometimes require effort, but also offer a new way of seeing things. Wines that remain memorable.” – Rudi Wagentristl

The Vineyards

Ried Föllikberg

The Föllikberg is an alluvial cone of the Leitha
Mountains located south of Großhölein. It was
created 16 million years ago when rivers transported gravel and sand from the Leitha Mountains into the ancient Tethys Sea. The site’s heavy, calcareous and particularly fertile sediment soils offer the best preconditions for our Blaufränkisch, Zweigelt, Cabernet Sauvignon, Welschriesling, Gelber

Ried Kreiderstein

For over one hundred years, the southwest slopes of the Leitha Mountains near Müllendorf have served as a quarry for limestone in its purest form: chalk.

The stark white cliffs of the quarry can be
seen from a distance and are always fascinating to behold. Our Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc vineyards have their home on this unique soil.

Ried Reisbühl

The Reisbühel vineyard is one of the very best vineyards of the Leitha Mountains. Outstanding grapes for our most powerful Blaufränkisch ripen in this particularly warm, southeast-facing site that is well protected from the wind.

Setz

Between the wine villages Großhölein and
Kleinhölein, the two parcels Kraplried and
Reisbühl unite in one of the most famous vineyards in Burgenland. These historical sites were first documented in 1570. A warm microclimate prevails here due to the wind-protected, southeast facing
exposition on the foot of the Leitha Mountains.
The topsoil is sandy to light loamy with high lime content. Subterranean it is quite rocky and well-balanced soil hydrology is provided. These are perfect preconditions for powerful red wines from Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt.

The Wines

This elegant Chardonnay offers juicy yellow fruit and subtle nutty aromas. Grown on calcareous soils, it impresses with fresh acidity and fine minerality.

Silky and inviting on the palate, with a delicate texture and bright, food-friendly character. A stylish companion for fish, poultry, and light dishes.

An elegant, juicy Pinot Blanc with aromas of ripe stone fruit, pear, and subtle nutty spice. Harmonious and food-friendly on the palate, a fine match for fish, poultry, and light dishes. Light yellow-green with silver reflections. Notes of meadow herbs, orange zest, and pear, layered with a delicate nutty touch. Juicy and full-bodied, with ripe white stone fruit, lively acidity, and refined length. Complex and persistent with excellent ageing potential and exceptional value.

The Kreidestein vineyard in Müllendorf, marked by its sparse limestone soils and cool nighttime temperatures, creates the perfect environment for this mineral-driven, refined Blaufränkisch. Dark ruby with violet highlights and a soft clearing at the rim. Aromatically expressive with ripe cherry, orange peel, gentle spice, and a floral touch of violet. Juicy and layered on the palate. Plum, nougat, and mineral lift combine with blackcurrant hints on a long, balanced finish.

This Zweigelt originates from select vineyards along the limestone slopes of the Leithagebirge, where the mineral-rich terroir shapes its refined structure and layered aromatics. Deep ruby garnet with hints of violet and a touch of translucence at the edge. On the nose, subtle oak spice meets graphite and stony depth, followed by blackberries and a trace of cassis. The palate is light on its feet yet structured, with fine tannins, dark cherry, and a distinctively savoury, saline finish.
